I’ve subscribed to cloud storage. Do I still need to subscribe to a SIM data plan?
I Subscribed to Cloud Storage. Do I Still Need a SIM Data Plan?
Quick answer: Yes. Cloud storage and SIM cellular data are two different services. A HOSAFE UBox 4G camera still needs an active SIM data plan to stay online, even if you have subscribed to cloud storage.
Cloud Storage and SIM Data Are Not the Same
Cloud storage is used to save motion-triggered recordings online for later playback or download. SIM cellular data is what allows the 4G camera to connect to the network and communicate with the UBox app.
| Service | What It Does | Is It Required? |
|---|---|---|
| SIM cellular data | Keeps the 4G camera online, loads live view, sends alerts, transmits videos, and allows remote control in the app. | Required for 4G camera use. |
| Cloud storage | Saves motion-triggered video clips online so you can review or download them later. | Optional. You can use SD card storage instead if supported. |
Why Does a 4G Camera Still Need SIM Data?
Your camera is a 4G camera, so it is designed to work in places without WiFi. To do that, it uses SIM cellular data instead of a home router.
SIM data is needed for:
- Keeping the camera online in the UBox app
- Viewing real-time live video
- Receiving motion alert notifications
- Transmitting videos and app commands
- Uploading motion recordings to the cloud, if cloud storage is enabled
Is Cloud Storage Required?
No. Cloud storage is optional. If you do not want to subscribe to cloud storage, you can insert a supported SD card into the camera. When motion is detected, the camera can save activity videos to the SD card instead of cloud storage.
